A Life in Service
Shri Shankarrao Pitla (20 December 1949 – 4th August 2021) was a businessman, lifelong Congressman and public servant from Mumbai whose life embodied service before self. Born in the Koli (Scheduled Caste) community and rooted in the Opera House area of Girgaum, he spent more than four decades lifting up the marginalised and strengthening democratic institutions at the grassroots. His public life was marked by a rare combination of conviction, practical compassion and an unshakeable belief that every person deserved the chance to stand with dignity.
From 1969, Shri Pitla rose through the Indian National Congress with the energy of an organiser and the attentiveness of a neighbour. He served first as Block General Secretary and later as President of the Opera House Taluka Congress Committee, then as Organising Secretary of the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee and General Secretary of the Maharashtra Pradesh Youth Congress. In these roles he built youth membership, brought new voices into public life and strengthened the party at the local level. His service was never confined to meetings or titles: he led the Clean & Green Opera House drive, organised blood-donation camps, distributed books to needy students and helped people facing hardship find employment and access small-business loans.
His courage was equally evident in moments of political trial. In 1978, he stood with Smt. Indira Gandhi during her arrest, joined the Jail Movement and was himself imprisoned at Lamington Police Station. Even in that difficult hour, he worked to secure bail for four fellow activists. He later served as election in-charge for Pandharpur and Solapur and, in 1991, as AICC Observer in Narsinghpur, Madhya Pradesh, where Congress swept a constituency previously held entirely by the BJP. For many years he served as General Secretary of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee under successive presidents, including Smt. Pratibhatai Patil, Shri N.M. Kamble, Shri Sushil Kumar Shinde, Shri Ranjeet Deshmukh, Shri Prataprao Bhonsle and Smt. Prabha Rao. Through every chapter, his politics remained grounded in people and in the patient work of building trust.
Public Service & Community
Shri Pitla carried the same spirit into public service. From 14 September 1977, he served as a Special Executive Magistrate of the Government of Maharashtra, bringing care and fairness to a role of public responsibility. He sat on the Bombay Housing and Area Development Board and the Prime Minister Grant Project and served on the committees of J.J. Hospital and G.T. Hospital. He chaired the Hutment Development Committee, served on the Greater Mumbai Police Liaison Committee and the Opera House Rationing Vigilance Committee. Each appointment placed him close to the everyday realities of housing, health, safety and access, and he met those realities with practical advocacy rather than distant administration.
His commitment to community life also found expression in the institutions he helped lead. He held office in the All India Indo-Arab Friendship Association of Maharashtra and the Western India Photography Association. As a trustee, he led the Mumbai Lokseva Prathistan, Sarvaseva Prathistan and Jan Kalayan Kendra Trust. Across these varied responsibilities, his purpose remained consistent: to open doors for those too often overlooked, to make public systems more humane and to turn solidarity into useful, lasting action.
A Living Legacy
Today, the Shankarrao Pitla Foundation, registered in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, carries his vision forward. Guided by his family, with Chairperson Ms. Usha Shankarrao Pitla, Managing Trustee Mr. Nayesh Shankarrao Pitla and Charity Consultant Ms. Vanita Nayesh Pitla, the Foundation continues the work to which he gave his life. Through its work across India, including underserved urban and rural communities, it focuses on digital inclusion, quality education, healthcare access and community development — practical pathways through which opportunity can reach people where they are.
The Foundation’s work is a living expression of the values Shri Shankarrao Pitla embodied. His memory endures not simply in the offices he held or the causes he advanced, but in the people who were encouraged, protected and given a fairer opportunity to thrive. His life remains a reminder that real change grows from practical support, shared responsibility and the dignity of self-reliance.
